Core Infection Prevention and Control Practices for Healthcare Delivery

The Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) is a federal advisory committee chartered in 1991 to provide advice and guidance to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regarding the practice of infection control and strategies for surveillance, prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistance and related events in United States healthcare settings.

Recommendations from the HICPAC for Core Infection Prevention and Control Practices for Safe Healthcare Delivery in All Health-Care Settings include a variety of core practice categories. These core practices are considered standards of care and/or accepted practices. Adherence to these practices is essential to providing safe and high-quality patient care across all settings where healthcare is delivered. From education and training to safety precautions, there are variety of things that healthcare workers should do to provide a safe, clean environment for patients. One of those core practice categories is hand hygiene. Learn more about the core practices in this category below.

Hand Hygiene

Healthcare personnel should perform hand hygiene in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. Either an alcohol-based hand rub or handwashing with soap and water should be used for the following clinical indications:

  • Immediately before touching a patient
  • Before performing an aseptic task (i.e. placing an indwelling device) or handling invasive medical devices
  • Before moving from work on a soiled body site to a clean body site on the same patient
  • After touching a patient or the patient’s immediate environment
  • After contact with blood, body fluids or contaminated surfaces
  • Immediately after glove removal

Healthcare personnel should be sure to perform hand hygiene with soap and water anytime the hands are visibly soiled. In addition, you should ensure that all supplies necessary for adherence to hand hygiene are readily accessible in all areas where patient care is being delivered.
