About Living Water International
Living Water International exists to demonstrate the love of God by helping communities get access to desperately needed clean water. More than a billion people in the world live on less than a dollar a day, and at least 663 million people lack access to safe drinking water. Around the world, communities are trapped in poverty because they suffer from water-related diseases and parasites or because they spend much of their time transporting water long distances. In response to this need, Living Water International implemented participatory, community-based water solutions in developing countries. Since the organization began, they’ve completed more than 18,000 water projects!
The Need for Clean Water
Water is the foundation for many things. For the millions of thirsty people throughout the developing world, water can transform lives in a variety of ways. More than 840,000 people are estimated to die each year from diarrhea as a result of unsafe drinking-water, sanitation and hand hygiene. Simply washing hands with soap and water can cut diarrhea cases almost in half! While more than 2 billion people have gained access to improved sanitation facilities since 1990, another 2.4 billion people still lack that access. In addition, waterborne parasites such as roundworm, whipworm and hookworm impact children’s ability to attend school and focus in the classroom, therefore limiting their potential. Globally, women and children spend an average of 200 million hours every day collecting water; often times that water is already contaminated. The journey to collect that water is often unsafe, with steep, rocky or muddy trails. Not having to deal with a daily water crisis would allow time for school, work, life and health. Every dollar you invest in safe water and sanitation yields $4 in health care savings, improved health and time saved.
